CONCRETE FRAME
GROUP 9
Why choose concrete framing?
Thermal Properties - Concrete-framed structures have the ability to capture the heat from the sun during the day hours and release it throughout the night to maintain the temperature in an indoor space. This is useful during when the fall and winter months bring cold nights and the tenants do not have to turn the temperature up just to keep a comfortable atmosphere in the living space.
Fire Prevention - Typically, a 4" thick concrete wall comes with an approximate fire rating of 1 hour. This is significant when comparing concrete to other commonly used building materials such as steel. A building with a steel structure must be sprayed with an intumescent coating to increase the length of time the member can withstand fire before it fails. This may seem insignificant, but when every member in a building needs multiple coats of intumescent paint, the cost for materials and labor can really add up.
Versatility - Concrete mixtures can be customized according to the conditions of the surrounding environment and the desires of the customer. There are countless combinations of agregate sizes, water content, superplasticisizers and other admixtures that bring unique properties to the mixture.
Aesthetics - Concrete is unique in that it can be molded onsite with projects that utilize cast-in-place concrete. It provides a clean, uniform appearance that be left exposed and continue to look admirable for years after installation.
Efficiency - Concrete has a long service life with a low maintenance cost compared to other competing structural building materials. Depending on the type and design of the structure, concrete may be the cheapest material for the job. Concrete can be made in large quantities and from recycled materialsmaking it both efficient and sustainable.
